Diving through a giant kelp forest is an experience every diver should have. There is nothing quite like moving among the swaying blades as the forest transforms from the sunlit canopy to the shadowed holdfasts below, with each level revealing a different world of marine life.
This piece was inspired by my first dive off Catalina Island, where I became completely enchanted by the kelp during my safety stops. I was especially captivated by the way sunlight danced through the blades, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the water.
Original acrylic pointillism on 16 × 20-inch canvas.
