A pointillist artwork featuring a juvenile blacksmith fish.

Juvenile Blacksmith

The first time I saw a juvenile Blacksmith, I was convinced I had discovered a wayward tropical fish that had somehow wandered into the chilly waters of San Diego. I certainly wasn’t expecting to find such a burst of color darting in and around the surf grass!

These vibrant, two-toned juveniles are little showstoppers, growing into striking adults with beautiful blue coloration. The Marine Room in La Jolla is home to many of these young fish, making every dive an opportunity to spot one weaving through the reef.

This piece celebrates the unexpected beauty and colorful surprises that can be found in Southern California’s waters.
